William Ault (1842-1929) was involved with several companies making art pottery and utilitarian wares. In 1883 he established Bretby Art Pottery with Henry Tooth, who was co-founder of Linthorpe Art Pottery. Christopher Dresser designed many pieces for Linthorpe but after the liquidation sale, moulds of his designs continued to be used by several firms, including Ault Pottery.
William Ault established Ault Pottery in 1887 with his daughter, Clarissa, becoming lead decorator. Clarissa was known to have painted designs by Christopher Dresser. Dresser worked as a freelance designer for Ault between 1892 and 1896.
