Brynmawr Furniture Makers Ltd was set up in Wales during the Great Depression. The Quaker led effort began in 1929 to save the factory and to help provide relieve the high unemployment issues facing the area. It was known for its utilitarian designs. Paul Matt was its chief designer and cabinet maker. During the 1930s he set down plans for a furniture production factory. His designs gave the furniture its distinctive style with bevels being regularly used to give a rounded style and to disguise the use of plywood. The design had a simple and minimal appearance, reflecting Quaker philosophy
