DICON NANCE 1909 - 2002 (Richard William ‘Dicon’ Nance)
Dicon was born in Cornwall near St Ives. During the 1930s he worked as an assistance at the Leach Pottery. He started a cabinet making business with his brother Robert, which was suspended during the War years when he worked in Ghana with the potter Michael Cardew.
In 1946 they re-establised the cabinet making workshops on the quayside at St Ives, primarily making pottery wheels for the Leach Pottery. The inside of the shop was turned into an art gallery, showcasing paintings by friends and local artists.
He was a Founder Member of the Penwith Society in 1949, and after a teaching stint in Thailand for UNESCO, he returned to St Ives as an assistant to Barbara Hepworth until 1971.
