Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin (1812 - 1852) was an English architect, designer, artist and critic. He was instrumental in the role of reviving the Gothic style, which culminated in designing the interior of the Palace of Westminster and it’s iconic clock tower, housing the bell known as Big Ben. Having converted to Roman Catholicism, Pugin was unable to submit his designs for Westminster under his own name and therefore they were submitted through Charles Barry, who won the contract. Pugin was tasked with the interior design, to include the wallpapers and furnishings.
